Tips to get Children More Active, brought to you by Australian Little Athletics:
The research indicates activity levels for girls decline seven per cent per year of age and three per cent for boys. Evidence from various studies also points to TV viewing as a strong predictor of weight gain in children.
- Here are some ways you can encourage and help your child be more active:
o Lead by example; the research shows that parents have an influence on whether a child is active or not. Children learn from example, so you need to be a role model in showing them how easy and fun it is to be active.
o Be active with your children – walk them to and from school, walk the dog, play Frisbee or go bike riding
o Encourage children to spend time outside
o Don’t have a TV in your child’s bedroom and set rules about TV and computer use.
o Support your child’s sporting interests.
o Encourage them to try new things and always praise their efforts.
o Buy “active” gifts like a tennis racket, roller blades, Frisbee, skateboard, balls or a skipping rope.
o Provide space that encourages active play.
